Te Tahuna Māori Trust is an Ahu Whenua Trust located at Korokitewao Bay, Lake Rotoiti, on the ancestral lands of Rotoiti 13D2. Established in 1981, the Trust continues the vision of our tūpuna to care for and grow the whenua, guided by the tikanga, values, and aspirations of Ngāti Tamateatutahi-Ngāti Kawiti.

At the heart of our mahi is the principle of kaitiakitanga – ensuring that this land is nurtured and sustained for the benefit of current and future generations. Today, Te Tahuna Trust manages 49 hectares of whenua, including 28 leasehold sections and 23 hectares leased to the Hinehopū Golf Club. Our role is not only about stewardship of land and assets, but also about strengthening the cultural, social, and economic wellbeing of our whānau.

Our History

Te Tahuna Trust was established to ensure the sustainable, culturally grounded care of our ancestral lands. From our tūpuna at Lake Rotoiti to Tapuaeharuru Marae, our story is one of resilience and connection.

Trustees

The governance of the Trust is vested in five trustees, each offering extensive experience in governance, education, health, public service, and cultural leadership, ensuring well-rounded and informed oversight.

Distribution Policies

Education, wellbeing, and cultural pride are central to our kaupapa. The Trust provides a range of grants to reflect our belief that every investment in our people is an investment in our future — mō ake tonu atu.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, Te Tahuna Māori Trust remains steadfast in its role as kaitiaki of the whenua, the people, and the vision of Ngāti Tamateatutahi-Ngāti Kawiti. Together, we honour our past, strengthen our present, and plan boldly for the generations to come.

Ngā mihi nui ki te whānau, ngā trustees, me ngā hoa mahi katoa.

Who We Are & What We Do

Our kōrero begins with the deep spiritual and genealogical connections that bind our people to this whenua. Tapuaeharuru Marae, situated on these lands, is the cultural heart of Ngāti Tamateatutahi-Ngāti Kawiti — a place where whakapapa is honoured, tikanga is upheld, and our hapū identity continues to flourish.

Our kaupapa is simple yet profound: to uplift the whenua and the people of Ngāti Tamateatutahi-Ngāti Kawiti. This includes responsible land management, support for education and wellbeing, investment in cultural identity, and planning that balances economic sustainability with the protection of taiao. Through these efforts, Te Tahuna Trust serves as a bridge between the legacy of our tūpuna and the aspirations of future generations.

Our Vision for Eco-Tourism

Hear from Ivor Jones, Chairperson of Te Tahuna Trust, as he shares the Trust’s exciting plans for redeveloping the historic Hinehopu Tearooms and promoting eco-tourism on the whenua, including nature walks and access to nearby hot pools.
